Tears form an essential part of your eye. Tears help to wash the particles and foreign bodies from your eyes. If you are lacking in tears, then it means that you have dry eyes. It is necessary that the right amount of water content and moisture are present in your eyes.

If you have scratching, stringing or burning sensation, then it is quite possible that you have dry eye. If your eyes get strained or even tired after reading for short time period, then that is also an indication of dry eye. In such circumstances, you feel uncomfortable if you wear contact lens. If you have dry eyes, then it can lead to tiny abrasion in your eye.

The causes of dry eye are as follows:

Your eye becomes dry with age. The oil content in our body tends to reduce with age. A person of 65 year loses 60% of oil as compared to the person of 18 year of age. This problem is mostly found in women as compared to men as they have drier skin. The tear film is affected due to oil deficiency. The tear film evaporates the water that is necessary for the cornea and makes your eye dry.

Other factors that lead to the formation of dry eye are dry, windy or hot climates, air-conditioning, high altitude and smoke from the cigarette that causes dry eyes. At times, people experience irritation while reading or even when they are working on a computer.

Go for artificial tears like drops or ointment that are available in the market. The ointments last for long but at the same time are thick and bring a problem of blurred vision. Avoid smoke like air conditioning, direct wind, and second-hand smoke. Go for humidifier especially in winters. Give a required amount of rest necessary for your eyes and blink your eyes more often.

When to consult a doctor

If you find that your eyes have gone red or are painful, then consult a medical professional. At times, you may have discharge, lesion on your eyelid or eye. People who have a drooping eyelid, bulging eye or have trauma in the eye should consult a doctor at once. At times, your mouth becomes dry and you are likely to get pain in your joints.
